In a mood for old-time music? With workshops, jam sessions, concerts and panel discussions, the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention brings some of the country’s finest old-time musicians into direct contact with fans and aspiring players of all ages. The welcoming vibe flows directly from the front-porch nature of the music, which took shape in Appalachia before new-fangled mass media like radio and television homogenized so much of American culture. Among the numerous highlights are the Foghorn Stringband (at Freight & Salvage Sept. 21 and Ashkenaz Sept. 23) and the Bay Area debut of fiddle master Bruce Molsky’s Mountain Drifters at the Freight on Sept. 23. But the Berkeley Farmer’s Market string band contest (Sept. 23) and family square dance at Ashkenaz (Sept. 24) are always a hoot, too.
