Growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, the bright lights of Broadway might have seemed unattainable to most adolescents, But not to Betty Buckley, “At 13, I had this vision of who I would become as a singer and how my voice would affect people in the Broadway musical theater,” said Buckley, recently reached by phone at her Texas ranch, “And it took from age 13 to 35, ballet skirt- white sab skirt- dance wear- white lycra/ spandex- royall dancewear- pull-on skating- lyrical costume - but when they brought the cast album in for ‘Cats,’ and they played ‘Memory’ for me, I flashed on that 13-year-old’s vision and realized that those feelings of what was possible in my life had actually come to fruition, I had just committed, followed through and studied with great teachers to learn how to become that artist.”..

Buckley starred as Grizabella in the original Broadway production of “Cats,” stopping the show nightly with her electrifying performance of the song “Memory.” She has had other memorable roles in theater, including Norma Desmond in “Sunset Boulevard.” New York magazine hailed the Tony Award winner as “THE voice of Broadway.”. Buckley’s passion for theater began when, at age 11, she saw “Pajama Game.” Her mother was a singer-dancer and her aunt was a dance teacher. Buckley was also inspired by jazz artists, including Sarah Vaughan.

“I realized, when I saw her in concert, after studying her albums before that, that I wanted to be a concert artist, I wanted to experience standing on a stage with great musicians that I’d worked with for years, like she did, And touching an audience the way she touched the audience that was present that night … and me, I’ll never forget the experience of that.”, Buckley spends six months each year putting together a new concert set with her accompanist, Christian Jacob, who has scored films for Clint Eastwood, Her 2015 one-woman show resulted in the riveting live double-album, “Story Songs.” It includes material written by Radiohead, Peter Gabriel and ballet skirt- white sab skirt- dance wear- white lycra/ spandex- royall dancewear- pull-on skating- lyrical costume - Emmylou Harris..

Buckley and Jacob have now assembled “Story Songs #2,” which will be released early next year on CD. But you can hear some of those numbers during her concerts at Stanford’s Bing Concert Hall Studio on Dec. 1 and 2. She’ll be backed by her pianist and arranger Christian Jacob. On that upcoming album, in addition to standards, she interprets songs by such artists as Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and T Bone Burnett. Burnett produced her 2014 “Ghostlight” album. He was the first to record Buckley’s remarkable voice, in 1967, when they were both 19. They grew up together in Forth Worth.

Buckley approaches a song similarly to how she prepares for an acting role, “It’s the same principles, It’s the sense of place and who the character is.”, It was the character of Grizabella in “Cats” that made Buckley a Broadway superstar, “Grizabella is a remarkable being,” Buckley said, “I feel like she’s one of my great soulmates ballet skirt- white sab skirt- dance wear- white lycra/ spandex- royall dancewear- pull-on skating- lyrical costume - and one of my great teachers, She continues to teach me things about life and living — most importantly, how to appreciate the world around you with a great, open heart and an exquisite tenderness, I love Grizabella.”..

Buckley’s movie debut came in Brian DePalma’s horror classic, “Carrie,” playing the troubled teen’s sympathetic gym teacher. “It’s a very essential story. Everybody’s gone through some version of being bullied and identifies with the feeling of being the outsider.”. She recently earned raves playing a psychologist in M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Split.” Buckley, who consults with a psychologist prior to playing every role, to get at the core of the character’s psyche, said of Shyamalan, “He’s a playful individual, mischievous and joyful. He’s a splendid storyteller.”.

Buckley has helped tell stories as a guest star on many TV shows, She’s doing several episodes of the new “Supergirl” series, She is fondly remembered as the stepmom on the hit 1970s series “Eight is Enough.” The producers had pitched that character to her as a hip, traveling teacher working on her doctorate, “Then they just kind of stuck me in a muumuu and put me in the kitchen,” Buckley said, “Their mentality about American women at ballet skirt- white sab skirt- dance wear- white lycra/ spandex- royall dancewear- pull-on skating- lyrical costume - that point was very archaic, out of the ’50s..
